A network is the process by which two or more computers remain connected to each other in order to exchange information, data, and content.

It is formed with hardware like routers, switches, access points, etc. and software like operating systems and other applications.

Based on geographical location, computer networks are of the following types:

LAN:

It stands for local area network. It connects computers situated at smaller distances.

WLAN:

It stands for wireless local area network. It is the same as LAN, but wireless.

WAN:

Its full form is a wide-area network. It connects computers to a wide area, as far as from one continent to another.

MAN:

It stands for metropolitan area network. Its geographical periphery is between LAN and WAN.

PAN:

It stands for personal area network. It serves a particular person only.

CAN:

It stands for campus area network. It is larger than LAN. It can be seen on places like campuses, colleges, and universities.

SAN:

It stands for storage area network. It works like a storage drive. Only individuals with access to it can use this network.

VPN:

It stands for virtual private network. It secures user identity by creating an encrypted channel. As a result, a point-to-point network is established.
