OTTAWA, May 31, 2023 — In response to the growing number of malicious hacking incidents, Canada’s Defense Minister Anita Anand announced on Wednesday that Canada will collaborate with the United States to develop a unified cyber security certification framework for defense contractors. The framework will be identical for both countries, ensuring a streamlined approach to address the issue.

Speaking at CANSEC, an annual defense trade show in Ottawa, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand emphasized the significance of the cyber domain for national security, particularly in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine.

Minister Anand highlighted the vulnerability of defense contractors and subcontractors in Canada, who have been targeted by malicious cyber activities resulting in the exposure of classified information.

To mitigate these risks and maintain eligibility for future international defense procurement opportunities, the Canadian defense ministry stated that certification must be obtained by the end of next year. By collaborating with the United States, the certification process will be harmonized, allowing defense contractors working in both countries to undergo certification only once.
