Spotify users can ask Gemini AI to find and play their favorite music now

Looking for specific songs, artists, or albums to play on Spotify? You can now get a helping hand from AI.

As spotted by 9to5Google, access to Google's Gemini AI is currently rolling out to the Spotify Android app. You can request any music from the vast Spotify universe by speaking to Gemini using natural language. The capability comes courtesy of Gemini extensions, which allow the AI to expand its powers to other apps and services.

There are a few requirements and limitations before you're able to dive in, as explained on a Google support page.

The feature is still in the process of rolling out, so you may not be able to access it yet. When I asked Gemini to play music from Spotify, it told me that it couldn't directly play music on the service.

Spotify plays the specific song you request only if you have a Spotify Premium subscription. You'll also need to link your Spotify account to the Google account you use on your Android device. Further, Gemini can search for and find songs, albums, genres, and more but it can't create a Spotify playlist.

The Spotify extension is available only in the Gemini Android app and therefore the Spotify Android app. That means you can't use it through the Gemini app on the iPhone, in the Gemini web app, or in Google Messages. To take advantage of the extension, you must turn on Gemini Apps Activity in your Google account settings. Further, the Spotify extension works only when Gemini's language is set to English.

How to enable and use Gemini's Spotify extension

To get started, make sure both Spotify and Gemini are installed on your device. Open the Gemini app, tap your profile image in the upper right, and then select Gemini Apps Activity. Turn on the feature if it's not already on. Go back to the previous screen and select Extensions. Swipe down the screen. If the Spotify extension is available, you'll see it listed here. Make sure it's enabled.

Assuming the extension is active, use the microphone icon to ask Gemini to play, search, or browse music on Spotify. (Gemini Live can not currently use this extension.) You can issue any of the following requests, according to Google:

Search for songs by [artist's name].Search for the song that goes [lyrics].Find a Spotify playlist with [genre, mood, or activity] music.Play [album name] on Spotify.Play [song name] by [artist name] on Spotify.Play my Spotify playlist called [playlist name].Play music for [activity] on Spotify.

Spotify is the latest service being set up to work with Gemini. But most of the existing extensions are for Google products, such as Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps, Google Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music. Access to third-party services is in the rollout phase, so it may take time for them to fully integrate with Gemini.
