This bike computer might just convince me to ditch my smartwatch for workouts

I've tested a few bicycle computers and find that I prefer them to smartwatches because the key information is out in front of me, so I can keep my eyes on the path ahead. I don't feel comfortable lifting my wrist all the time to check my progress, so if you're using your device for navigation, then a bike computer is the better option.

Wahoo just announced its latest cycling computer, the Elemnt Ace, and it looks to bring a new sensor and offer additional metrics while providing a large color display for easy navigation. Prefer a touchscreen or physical buttons? The Elemnt Ace incorporates a touchscreen that works in concert with the physical buttons so you have a choice while cycling. It is available for $599.

Wind is a significant factor in resistance as you ride, and the new integrated wind sensor is designed to help quantify how wind and drafting off others impact your ride. There is an opening at the top front of the Elemnt Ace with a pressure sensor inside. The new metrics are identified as AeroBoost for tailwinds and drafting effects and AeroDrag for headwinds that slow you down. 

Another major element related to the effects of wind is the sail area that the wind is acting upon, but capturing and estimating that would require some advanced modeling and input.

When it comes to navigation, the Wahoo Elemnt Ace provides voice-guided turn-by-turn directions so you don't have to focus on the display while you ride on new, unfamiliar routes. The new Wahoo smartphone application improves the navigation experience, which can be frustrating when managed only on a bike computer.

The color TFT display is 3.8 inches in size with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 480 x 720 pixels. The touchscreen supports non-touch-enabled gloves and wet environmental conditions, enabling its use in inclement weather. It has an IPX7 water-resistant rating. Despite the large display, the Elemnt Ace manages to provide up to 30 hours of battery life with its dual-band GPS tracking.

The Wahoo smartphone app can be used to set up and customize the Elemnt Ace for your desired settings. Settings can be stored in the cloud and then synced to other Wahoo devices too.
