Sponsored Post Artificial intelligence (AI) offers enormous commercial potential but also substantial risks to data security if it is harnessed by cyber criminals intent on stealing or corrupting sensitive information for their own gain.

An assessment by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) published in January 2024 concluded that AI will almost certainly increase the volume and heighten the impact of cyber attacks over the next two years by providing a 'capability uplift in reconnaissance and social engineering' that makes malicious threats more effective, efficient and hard to detect.

Moving towards 2025 and beyond, the NCSC believes that the commoditisation of AI-enabled capabilities in criminal and commercial markets will also aid cyber crime and state actors in their endeavours, partly by helping them to analyse exfiltrated data fast and more effectively so it can be used to train AI models.

Cyber security firm Sophos agrees, pointing out that the large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama 2 made possible by AI allow cyber criminals to create diverse and deceptive content which can easily trick people into divulging sensitive information on an unprecedented scale.

That's what Sophos will be discussing in this webinar - The Dark Side of AI: Large-Scale Scam Campaigns Made Possible by Generative AI – at 10-11am BST on Thursday 25th of April. The company's X-Ops Ben Gelman will be demonstrating exactly how GenAI can be used to automate the creation of tools that can be used to steal users' credentials and other personal information which can then be used as the basis for full scale cyber attacks.

Ben will be showing you how LLMs can help even amateur and would be cyber criminals with basic writing and coding to easily create campaigns that combine text, images and audio to build convincing websites, product catalogues, testimonials and social media advertisement ready to lure unsuspecting victims into their trap.
