The Google Chromecast has been a streaming device staple since its launch 12 years ago, but cheaper alternatives, like the Fire TV Stick and the Roku Streaming Stick, have overshadowed it in recent years. Now, Google is completely revamping its streaming device and trying a new form factor with the launch of the Google TV Streamer.

The new device doesn't necessarily reinvent the wheel: It still makes dumb TVs smarter, adding the Google TV platform that gives you access to streaming services like Netflix and YouTube. That said, the Google TV Streamer is more like an Apple TV 4K than a streaming stick. There are also new smart device controls and Thread support, which makes the TV Streamer more than just for entertainment.

At first glance, the Google TV Streamer appears more like a smart home hub than a Chromecast alternative, with rounded edges and a design that resembles a compact, stumpy version of the Google Pixel Tablet charging dock. The aesthetics match Google's pebble-like industrial design, and the device is available in two colors: Porcelain and Hazel.

Google also redesigned the bundled remote control with a textured back and longer housing to improve ergonomics. Naturally, the streaming device has a "Find my remote" button that pings the remote control, though you can also call on Google Assistant or go to the Google Home app on your phone to find a lost remote.

A customizable shortcut button on the accessory lets you choose what app you'd like to launch quickly, and the volume controls have moved from the side to the front of the remote.

As mentioned before, the Google TV Streamer offers easy setup and control of smart home devices, thanks to its built-in Thread radio, Matter support, and Ethernet and HDMI ports. We'll have to test the device ourselves to see just how practical it is with appliances and devices from various brands.

This wouldn't be a new Google device in 2024 without some generative AI features. The Google TV Streamer features Gemini-powered TV overviews: AI-generated summaries that tell you what the show is about, what people are saying about it, and what to know before watching. You can also use AI to generate custom wallpapers and screensavers for your TVs.

The new Google TV Streamer is available for preorder today at $100, undercutting the Apple TV 4K, which starts at $129, and the Amazon Fire TV Cube, which costs $140. General availability and shipping starts on September 24.
